ABOUT devon
As a poet and writer, my original palette has been language and story telling. Now, as an abstract, mixed media artist working with acrylic paint, collage, pastels and charcoal, I delight in the exploration of colour and shape, texture and light. I’m drawn to the scarred surfaces that glimpse what lies beneath—subtle, excavated layers hinting of hidden stories, the elusiveness of memory, longing and hope. The past bleeding into the present. I begin a painting with a loose intention—a palette I want to explore, a feeling I want to capture—and paint without a destination in mind. My style is like an open-ended conversation between me and the materials—if I do this, the paint moves that way, the palette knife smears a random texture, charcoal will smudge unpredictably, and suddenly I’m on new ground. Painting this way keeps me in the moment, alert, in response, in wonderment.
